Congress may feel a little left out after reading the podcast highlights from last week what with both of its fellow branches of government being featured. No doubt, John Boehner is already on the phone to Neil deGrasse Tyson. Here are last week’s podcast highlights, featuring POTUS, SCOTUS and lots-more-OTUS.
WTF: Surprise! Yes, the President of the Unites States appearing on a podcast counts as a highlight. Marc Maron’s garage went on lockdown as President Obama dropped by for a discussion that ranged from the personal to the political. Little did we know this was just the beginning of a very significant week in Obama’s presidency.
Amicus: Dahlia Lithwick released a special episode of the Amicus podcast last week after the Supreme Court handed down two highly anticipated opinions in Obergefell v. Hodges and King v. Burwell. Lithwick spoke with Duke law professor Walter Dellinger about both decisions, starting with the Obergefell v. Hodges decision that found same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional, then moving to the King v. Burwell decision that upheld one of the key pillars of the Affordable Care Act—tax subsidies. Lithwick and Dellinger provided summaries of the decisions along with an analysis of the justices behind the majority and dissenting opinions and the long term implications of the decisions.
The Lowe Post: The NBA pivoted quickly from the finals to its draft last week, but this year’s champs were still celebrating. Zach Lowe had Golden State Warrior coach Steve Kerr on his podcast to talk about his team’s celebration since winning the championship. The two also discussed Kerr’s tactical moves in the series that seemed to turn the tide in his team’s favor, including going small with the insertion of Andre Iguodala into the starting lineup.
The Moth Podcast: The Moth Podcast marked Father’s Day with a show full of stories about fatherhood. Highlights included one man’s story of his life-long battle with fainting spells that he only recently overcame as a father and an immigrant’s story about the unknown sacrifices her father made for his family before moving to America, revealed to the daughter at a crucial time in their lives.
Reasonably Sound: If you didn’t get enough ice cream talk from the previous week’s Sporkful podcast, don’t fret. Last week’s Reasonably Sound kept the ice cream theme going with a show about ice cream trucks. Mike Rugnetta walked through the history of ice cream and the ice cream truck, with a focus on the story behind ice cream truck music. Beware, listening to the ice cream truck tunes played on the podcast might evoke a Pavlovian response and send you running out into the street for a frozen treat.
