The Week in Review for last week is short and sweet, a bit like that last piece of pecan pie lingering from Thanksgiving. The highlights from last week included a fictional battle for the ages (Rambo v. Rocky) and the kickoff of a podcast tour.
Last week’s Canon podcast featured a battle between Sylvester Stallone films for a spot in the canon of great films. There are Stallone films worthy of The Canon, you ask? Yes, at least according to hosts Devin Faraci and Amy Nicholson, who last week considered whether the original Rocky or First Blood (the original Rambo) deserved a place among the greats. With the release of Creed, the seventh movie in the Rocky franchise, it’s a perfect time to look back at the legitimately good films that started Stallone’s roller coaster career.
The Bullseye World Tour of Several American cities is officially finished, and now it’s time to reap the benefits. The first show from the tour, taped in Los Angeles earlier this month, was released last Tuesday. The Los Angeles tour stop featured interviews with improv comedy fixtures Matt Walsh and Brian Huskey, whose movie A Better You was recently released on demand, and actor William H. Macey, star of the Showtime series Shameless. Comedian Baron Vaughn and the band Chicano Batman also performed, making for an all-around fun, funny and highly entertaining start to the Bullseye live shows.
Finally, since we’re in that post-Thanksgiving time when you eat turkey at every meal for a week, here’s a bit of a leftover that I thought I’d carry over into last week’s podcast highlights. The final episode of The Message was released Sunday, November 22, punctuating a short but exciting ride with a climactic end. You can read my full review of the show here, but this sci-fi drama built in the style of old-time radio with a modern twist ended with a very satisfying and exciting episode. If you have a couple of hours to spare and are looking for a podcast drama to dive into, start downloading episodes of The Message now.
